Nole played better and deserved the title. It's the first time he looked fitter than Rafa and was able to handle the pressure better too. Well done & Congrats! If he can keep up the good work, his chance to becoming #1 is not that far away.
As for my dear Rafa after winning the 1st set, it's almost like IW all over again -- just with more resistance and different score line. It seemed to me that Rafa didn't play with full conviction -- he didn't really believe he could beat red hot Nole on hard courts. His poor serve percentage not to mention DF made him vulnerable and allowed confident Nole to dictate/win the points. He looked out of sorts but perhaps I expected too much from him.
Anyway, after reading what he said in his post-match interview [““I was there fighting until the last point. Nothing left in my body right now, so that's the sport. I love these kind of matches. For sure I love to win, not lose. (Smiling.) But from everything you learn. I had a fantastic American hard court season, two finals, and am ready for clay.”], I have to agree that he had great American hard court (first half or so) season. For that, I'm happy for him.
In summary, Nole has been playing incredibly well for the past 3-4 months while Rafa has shown that his mentality may not be as strong as we thought. (He’s human after all. :P) Undoubtedly, Nole is the best player (on hard courts) at the moment,
