John Flanagan

Liverpool-born Flanagan became one of the youngest players in Liverpools history to be allocated a first-team squad number when he was given the No. 38 shirt for the 2010-11 season when still several weeks short of his 18th birthday. Like his fellow defender Jack Robinson, Flanagan had impressed in Rodolfo Borrells Under-18 team at the Academy during the 2009-2010 season. Both youngsters comfortably made the step-up to the reserves squad and although Robinson, exactly eight months younger than Flanagan, ultimately made his first-team debut in the final League match of 2010-11, there were many who expected the early promise of Flanagan to be rewarded in a similar way before too long. Manager Roy Hodgsons faith and belief in their ability was proved when he named both 17-year olds in his squad for the Europa League match in Bucharest against Steaua early in December, 2010.
Flanagan, who normally plays at right full-back, has already earned a reputation as a tough-tackling defender who is good in the air and composed with the ball at his feet. Tony Barrett, who was then at the Liverpool Echo, predicted early big things for young Flanagan and was enthusiastic about his belief that he would be "the next youngster to emerge from the club's Academy to make a big impression at reserve team level and then, if progress continues to be made, on the first team itself." That progression is well on its way now with Barrett confirming that the jump up into John McMahons Reserve team squad did not phase the defender in the slightest and that he "just got on with the job in hand with the minimum of fuss, defending with a characteristic zeal but never missing the chance to get forward and get crosses into the box whenever the opportunity presented itself."
Flanagan himself knows that much remains to be done before he can expect to break into the first team in the same way as other locally-born full-backs like Gerry Byrne and Tommy Smith. It is far too early to compare him with some of the illustrious Liverpool defenders of the past because there are a number of Liverpool defenders of the present he will need to oust before he becomes anything like a first choice for the main team. But until or unless that happens, his place on the bench in Romania serves as proof that he can expect to have
and is expected to have
a good future as a professional footballer.
