Rankings Breakdown
For the hard-core fans and rankings mavens, here is some nuance to the points Nadal can earn in Barcelona. If Nadal wins the title, the 500 winner’s points will not be added to his 52-week total till August 1, the Monday of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington, D.C. (See explanation below.) So while doing well in Barcelona will help Nadal in the quest to finish the year No. 1 – which he has consistently said is his priority – it won’t help him hold off Novak Djokovic in the next three months when he has a war chest of points to defend through the end of Wimbledon.
Why won’t a strong Barcelona result help Nadal in the short run? Players must count their best four results from ATP World Tour 500 tournaments among their ‘Best 18’ tournaments over a 52-week period to determine their current South African Airways ATP Ranking. When Nadal did not play Washington last year it became clear that he could not play four 500 events for the 2010 season and a zero-point result was added to his ‘Best 18’ total.
That zero pointer will drop from his 52-week ranking on the Monday of Washington (1 August) and at that time any points earned in Barcelona this year will be added to his ‘Best 18’ total.
