BLUES SPREAD THE SMILES
Four Chelsea players helped sponsors Samsung donate valuable sporting equipment to schools in Bangkok on Saturday afternoon, while also joining Foundation coaches to deliver their sessions to local children.
Alex, Florent Malouda, Josh McEachran and Nathaniel Chalobah joined the coaches at the ACC Academy and spent time with the 50 kids as they played at a series of skills stations, working on their control, passing, dribbling and shooting, before meeting the Academy principal and signing autographs for the youngsters, who also received a Chelsea-branded Here to Play, Here to Stay goody bag containing water bottles and caps.
Samsung have also donated basketballs, footballs and volleyballs as part of their ongoing commitment to the cause, which made for an exciting day all round.
Chelsea and Samsung in Bangkok
For 16-year-old Nathaniel Chalobah, the event was just the latest in an eye-opening introduction to life as a first-team player.
'It was really good for me because I remember being at that age and that stage, it was good to see the smiles on their faces, and seeing Chelsea players must have made their day so it's a good thing.
I was quite shocked coming out here and seeing the likes of Flo, Alex, Didier and Torres getting jumped on by all the fans, thinking that could be me in a few years. It's pretty scary, but it's alright as long as the fans are being nice, when you get mobbed it's a bit much though!
It's been a great experience for me, I've looked up to a lot of these players for a long time and just being with them around the hotel and training with them has been a really big learning curve for me. This is what I want to be doing and I'm enjoying it.'
The youngster, who played in pre-season last summer when only 15, has seen match action alongside John Terry at the heart of the defence. It must be rather surreal for one so new to the game to be playing alongside the England captain.
'the first time I signed my contract at Chelsea I met JT on the same day, and I've always looked up to him as a player. To be playing next to him now is amazing, I don't think about it too much because it's happened so quickly, but I'm just glad it's happening.
'The coaches have been telling me to keep going and that I've done well so far, so hopefully I can keep it up.'
Leading the club's coaching work in our tour destinations is Ian Woodroffe, who explained the setup.
'This is part of Samsung's regular work with the local schools here, and they have been invited in to take part in the session today,' he said.
'it's been fantastic, and for the duration of the trip we have worked with a range of youngsters, from orphans in Kuala Lumpur to disabled groups, but the support and enthusiasm has been tremendous wherever we have gone.
'The standards of some of the players is very good, technically they're talented and have good close control, but more importantly they enjoy the game and that is what we're all about.
'Bringing the players down as well, as we did at the Blue Pitch in Kuala Lumpur just makes it come alive for the kids, and being able to interact with them is a fantastic once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It's not something you can measure but it wouldn't be happening if we weren't doing all this work on the club tours.'
