Barcelona want Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas to help fund dream move by losing out on £4m - report
Catalans still chasing Gunners skipper but want him to waive around £4 million in salary payments to enable them to compile a transfer package which Arsene Wenger deems acceptable
Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas may have to give up around £4 million in order to secure his dream move back to Barcelona, according to the Daily Mirror.
The 24-year-old is the Catalans’ top remaining transfer target, but the Spanish giants have yet to submit a bid which matches the Gunners’ £40m valuation of their skipper, and the recent defections of youngsters Hector Bellerin and Jon Toral from Camp Nou to the Emirates Stadium have provided an additional obstacle to any agreement.
Now it has been suggested Fabregas may have to accept a cut of £4m from his salary over the length of any contract to enable Barcelona to up their offer and get the deal done.
The revelation comes as one of European football’s longest transfer sagas appears to be nearing a conclusion, with Gunners boss Arsene Wenger reportedly keen to finalise the sale of his captain so he can reinvest the money elsewhere in his squad.
Valencia winger Juan Mata is widely reported to be the Frenchman’s top target and could be available for around £17m, although moves for defenders Phil Jagielka of Everton and Gary Cahill of Bolton also remain distinct possibilities.
Fabregas was omitted from Arsenal’s squad for both their Asian tour and the Emirates Cup with a hamstring injury cited as the reason behind his absence, but Wenger has readily admitted the protracted nature of the negotiations with Barcelona has unsettled the Spaniard.
