DAVID LUIZ: WAIT IS OVER Posted on: Wed 14 Sep 2011
It was a night of firsts for David Luiz at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.
The fine goal that set Chelsea on the road to victory in our opening group game was the Brazilian defender's first in the Champions League. It was also his first match in the competition for Chelsea, and on top of all that, it was the first football he has played for the club since May.
It was an admirable contribution from a player who was an unused sub for his national team throughout the Copa America in the summer and on returning to Cobham later than most as a consequence of that tournament, was immediately unable to train due to a thigh problem.
Last night against Bayer Leverkusen he was set a stiffer challenge than his team-mates this season, asked to perform in an important game without prior match practice.
'It was good,' he told the official Chelsea website after the game, a beaming smile on his face.
'It is a long time I didn't play and this game I played 75 minutes and it is good for me, and it is important inside my body that I came back for the game. My leg is good, it is normal.
'It was a nice goal,' added the central defender who swept the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the area. 'In training we shoot with the strikers.
'Now I have three goals at Stamford Bridge and I am very happy. I love the atmosphere here, the support, and all the time the players are together and this is of big importance.'
A sign of squad togetherness was clear in David Luiz's exuberant goal celebration which after the scorer's initial joy included an acknowledgement of the part Fernando Torres had played.
'Fernando had a very good game, two assists, and it is difficult for him because the people all the time speak about Fernando. It is difficult for one guy, big pressure in the head, but Fernando is a good guy and I know this season he will score many, many goals.'
It was near agony for David Luiz last season, watching on ineligible due to his Benfica appearances, as his new club played big European knockout ties.
'Last year I really wanted to play in the Champions League but I don't play but this season I enjoy it.
'Now we play a big game against Man United which has big players with good performances at the beginning of the season. It is a big game but we can prepare this week for it and I know on Sunday we will have a good game.'
