IVANOVIC: ON THE UP Posted on: Thu 20 Oct 2011
Goalscorer Branislav Ivanovic believes early strikes against Genk were vital on Wednesday evening, and praised Fernando Torres for his all-round display.
The Serbian added our fourth goal on the evening following on from a Raul Meireles opener and two Torres strikes, before Salomon Kalou added a fifth to equal our best ever Champions League win.
It puts us in a strong position for safe passage through to the knockout rounds, while also setting us up nicely for Sunday's west London derby at Queens Park Rangers.
'It looked easy but we started the game very well, very motivated and scored early goals,' Ivanovic said. 'In a game like this it is always easy to play, it looked easy but a Champions League game is never easy.
'A 5-0 shows how we dominated the game. We controlled the game for 90 minutes and we had some chances to score more but unfortunately we didn't.'
Torres could have had a hat-trick but saw his volley saved, only for Kalou to sweep in the rebound. The Spaniard now has four goals in his past four appearances.
'Fernando had a great performance today,' said Ivanovic. 'He worked very hard in training and this is a result of how he is working. We're looking for him to be better and better.
'We know inside the team we never questioned Fernando, it is a normal thing that players need time when they change clubs. Now everything is perfect and we're looking forward for this.
'For me it's enough he scored two goals [against Genk] and can save something for the other games.'
Torres completes his suspension when we travel to Loftus Road this weekend, but Ivanovic is priming himself for a fiery atmosphere. It will be our first competitive visit to W12 since 1996.
'We have to focus on our game, we have a very difficult game against QPR, a very big derby and it's very important for the fans and for the players. We expect a hard game,' said the Serbian.
'The season is long, this could be an important game but we have to focus on ourselves and look to win that game against QPR. We know how it will be and we have to be ready to fight for every ball.'
If the mentality on Sunday is as good as it was on Wednesday, then Ivanovic and his team-mates will be in confident mood for another victory.
