MONDAY MORNING BLUES RAISE FUNDS Posted on: Mon 19 Dec 2011
Supporters enjoyed an opportunity to come down and watch the players put through their paces at Stamford Bridge earlier today, all in aid of the club's chosen charity, Help a Capital Child.
Tickets for the event sold out within hours and the day turned out to be a real success, with almost all of the first team squad in action. John Terry and Petr Cech both trained after picking up knocks at the weekend, but the skipper's participation came to a premature end when he limped off after pinching his Achilles when blocking a shot. The injury though is not serious and Terry will be fit to face Tottenham on Thursday.
The Brazilian duo of David Luiz and Ramires weren't involved as they are both still carrying knocks, while Romelu Lukaku missed out due to his involvement with the reserve team in their game against Arsenal.
On arrival at Stamford Bridge the crowds were met with a wide range of activities which they were able to participate in. Chelsea FC coaches were on hand to showcase various skills and techniques while there were also ball jugglers, freestylers, a chance to meet Stamford the Lion and an EA Sports console area. Help a Capital Child fundraisers were on hand throughout the day collecting donations from the crowd.
The session began in jovial mood, with the whole team leaving Terry to run out on to the pitch all alone. The captain was under the impression that his team-mates were following right behind but as he reached the centre circle he soon realised that the joke was on him. As Andre Villas-Boas and his management team looked on, the players began with a light jog and some stretching exercises before being introduced to the crowd one by one. This preceded a routine which required the players to get together in groups and cuddle each other. Quite what the watching hordes made of that was anybody's guess.
Soon after and the intensity of the session was stepped up, giving the watching fans something to really get excited about as the players took turns to fire shots at goal from just outside the penalty area.
Paulo Ferreira hit an absolute peach into the top corner, while Ashley Cole was unlucky to see his effort crash against the post with Petr Cech rooted to the spot. Daniel Sturridge continued from where he left off at the weekend by firing confidently into the bottom corner.
The session culminated with a small-sided game which took place using only a third of the pitch. Terry's desire certainly couldn't be called into question after he clattered into Oriol Romeu only seconds into the game. A few minutes later though and the skipper was forced off with that injury.
Afterwards, 40-50 children from projects funded by Help a Capital Child were given the chance to meet the manager, who handed out gift bags and posed for photographs, no doubt making it a Christmas those children are unlikely to ever forget.
Rich Horsnell from Help a Capital Child was delighted with how the day turned out, saying: 'We had four groups down from different parts of London who absolutely loved seeing the players train here at Stamford Bridge.
'The groups were Barnet Young Carers, Venture Community Association in north Kensington, Plot 10 Community Play Project from Euston and also Wandsworth Young Carers.
'They have all had an amazing day, they had the chance to meet Andre Villas-Boas and have pictures taken, so a massive thank you to everybody at Chelsea for making so many Christmas dreams come true.'
Harry Clingham from the Venture Community Association echoed those sentiments and also talked briefly about the work his project carries out.
'We are an open access adventure playground for ages from 5-16 and we help out with all different kinds of activities in the community. 'Our aim is to integrate people within our communities and we are funded by Help a Capital Child which is why we are here today. 'The kids loved it here and the players made their day by waving and making time for them so it was absolutely brilliant for them.'
