Gunner: I am a lot like Bayern’s Gomez
Giroud snubbed Gomez due to too many similarities
Arsenal’s new striker Olivier Giroud has described himself as a striker with both size and mobility, a lot like prolific Bayern Munich striker Mario Gomez.
In fact, Giroud, who recently revealed rejecting a move to UEFA Champions League winners Chelsea, has now added that he also refused approaches from beaten finalists Bayern due to the many similarities he shares with Gomez.
“Bayern were at one point interested. But with [Mario] Gomez, it would have been difficult for us to both play as we have somewhat similar styles and physique,” Giroud told France Football in an interview explaining his rationale for joining the Gunners.
He added: “It is incredible for me. To already be a champion in France [with Montpellier], then play for Les Bleus, and now Arsenal.
“I repeat myself, but this is a beautiful story. When I was little boy, I wanted to play in the Premier League. My heart has always looked for Arsenal.”
Upon being unveiled as Arsenal’s latest signing, the 25-year old Giroud admitted that his youth career started out sl:-) and his rapid progress as an underdog is very similar to that of Gunners defender Laurent Koscielny.
Aside from Koscielny, other French stars who inspired Giroud to choose Arsenal include ‘The Invincibles’ trio Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, and Robert Pires.
“I saw they had [Thierry] Henry, there were also [Patrick] Vieira and [Robert] Pires. A true French touch. I have always loved the philosophy of their game and the state of mind of this club. The French were very successful there and the quality of life in London is exceptional,” Giroud concluded.
