Q & A with Nathan Adrian!
#What is your nickname?
Bok Choi is my nickname. Some kids on my high school swim team just found out that I was half Chinese. The most they knew of Chinese culture was the food, so they-they rolled with it.
#Do you have any superstitions?
I do not like superstitions. I think they can only really serve to hurt you. And I like washing my underwear.
#Who are the practical jokers on the U.S. swim team?
Allison Schmitt is, not only is she great in the water, but shes just hilarious. She actually trains with Michael [Phelps] at North Baltimore, so theyre pretty close and their-their chemistry is fun to watch. [In 2010] at the training camp in Stanford, Allison filled up a bucket of water and ice
and leaned it up against Michaels door. So when he opened it, he got a bunch of water and ice all over his room.
#What was it like replacing Jason Lezak as the 4x100m freestyle anchor at the 2009 Worlds?
Jason wasnt at-at the meet, and it really was kind of a boy stepping into a mans shoes at that point. Im glad that they trusted me with it because it boosted me to that next level to trust myself.
#How are your remote-controlled helicopter skills?
Im very mediocre. Not very good at all. Ive hit tons of things in my house. I wish the thing had bumpers on it. But unfortunately that wouldnt fly.
#What were you like as a kid?
Unmanageable. I had a lot of energy, just constantly running around doing different things. Thats one of the reasons why my mom got me into swimming. Somehow she had to drain me so I could actually go to sleep at night.
#Got any fitness tips for amateurs?
Being consistent. I think its easy to find a new trend or a new diet tip, find a new workout and do it for a week and then fall off forever. If you started a little slower and youd be consistent throughout three months, six months, the results are going to be that much better if you do it often.
#If you could be anything other than a swimmer, what it would be?
I would never trade lives with anybody. But if I was forced to, it would be [motorsports competitor] Travis Pastrana. I think that guy has the coolest lifestyle in the entire world. I mean, he just gets to play and he gets to, you know, express his creative side in his motor cross tricks. And then he gets to express his competitive side in his rally car racing.
#Whats the hardest workout youve ever done?
Every New Years when I was in high school and a little bit when I was in grade school, our coach would have us swim something like a 20,000-meter, 25,000-meter practice. Itd take four to five hours. It was just so brutal. The entire time youre just swimming up and down, hardly catching your breath. I was swimming at an indoor pool so I got a little bit of that chlorine cough. It was kind of a fun thing now that I look back on it, but it also ruined my New Years Eve.
#Whats the ready room like?
The ready room in my events, the sprint freestyles, is really intense. You got a lot of guys that are really strong. Masculinity is at its peak in terms of swimming. People are beating their chest. Theyre screaming. Theyre taking really big, deep breaths and doing a strange bark thing.
