Liverpool
Pepe Reina - 6.5 Reina was unlucky to have conceded three goal as he actually didn't have a bad game. Unfortunately for the Spaniard, he was let down by his defence on far too many occasions, something which happened frequently last term. Martin Kelly - 7 While he was the youngest member of the backline that Rodgers started with, Kelly was one of the better performers and he showed maturity beyond his years with his reading of the game. However, the England international does lack genuine pace and can be exposed by the nimblest of wingers, something the Premier League has in abundance. Daniel Agger - 5 Given recent rumours linking Agger with a move to Manchester City, it was good to see the Dane start alongside Skrtel in the heart of the Reds defence. However, it all turned pear-shaped two minutes before the hour mark as Agger was left with no choice but to bring Long down in the box after his defence had been sliced open, resulting in a penalty and a red card. Martin Skrtel - 6 Skrtel was one of the league's best centre-backs last season, but it was a poor day at the office for him at the Hawthorns. The Slovak struggled to cope with the pace of Odemwingie and the movement of Long, and spent much of the game chasing shadows, something you don't often see from Liverpool's rock at the back. Glen Johnson - 7 While he's most often been deployed as a right-back throughout his career, Johnson has no problems playing on the opposite flank when called upon, something he proved again on Saturday as he energetically bombed up and down the left wing. However, he didn't receive sufficient support from his team-mates, and couldn't do much on every occasion he was left stranded by the corner flag with two West Brom defenders bearing down on him. Lucas (off 69') - 5.5 In his defence, Lucas has only just recovered from a long-term injury and was expected to take some time to get accustomed to the rigours of the Premier League. Still, he looked severely off the pace against the Baggies and will need to improve soon if he wants to keep his place in Rodgers' starting XI. Joe Allen - 7.5 A fine display from the Welsh midfielder, who was Liverpool's best player on the day. Allen was tidy with his distribution and also tracked back to help out his defence when their opponents pushed forward, and already he looks like he could make a bigger contribution than Jordan Henderson did for all of last season. Steven Gerrard - 6.5 Gerrard struggled to exert his influence on the game, although his cause wasn't helped with the strange formation Rodgers opted for. At times, the Reds talisman was deployed in his favourite central-midfield role, but the lack of a left-winger meant he often had to drift out wide to provide an option, immediately negating his ability to run the show in the middle of the park. Stewart Downing (off 60') - 4 Within five minutes of the start, it began to look as though Downing had finally arrived as he picked up the ball down the right and whipped in a dangerous cross on his weaker foot into the box. However, that was the sole highlight in what was another awful display from the winger, who never looked up to see if he had a man to lay the ball off to, and instead insisted on running straight for the byline, before whipping in terrible cross after terrible cross. Luis Suarez - 6 Like Downing, Suarez started brightly but while he is indeed one of the best players in the Premier League, it remains to be seen if he can be considered one of the best strikers, as he missed a number of gilt-edged chances to put his side ahead. Fabio Borini - 6 A decent debut from the ex-Roma man, who made a couple of intelligent runs that were reminiscent of a certain Filippo Inzaghi. Subs Jamie Carragher (on 60') - 6 The veteran was brought on after Agger was sent off to shore up the Reds backline and did a decent enough job. Joe Cole (on 69', off 78') - N.A. You have to feel for the ex-West Ham wonderkid as he was handed his chance to re-establish himself under Rodgers, only to limp off with a hamstring injury after nine minutes. Andy Carroll (on 78') - N.A. It remains to be seen what kind of role Carroll will play at Anfield this season as he was only brought on with 12 minutes remaining, after the Baggies had taken a 3-0 lead.
