"...First, (this one is really the fantasy football golden rule) running backs are key. Take running backs early. There are many people who will take running backs with their first two picks, regardless of who else is available and swear by this strategy. I personally like to use it as a guideline, but if it's not there I don't force it. For example, if you can get a top WR and I mean an Owens, Harrison or a Moss, or if you can get McNabb, you might bend this rule. That's my philosophy. The general guideline is a good one though. Do your best to take a RB in the first round, or 2 in the first 3 rounds.
Second, in most leagues, TDs are key. Don't be too shaken up by lofty yardage totals. An example would be a guy like Keyshawn Johnson. He gets a lot of yards and catches, but rarely finds the end zone. I do happen to believe that will change this year, but that's generally the kind of guy to avoid early.
Third, don't panic because all of one position seems to be going fast. Pay attention to who people have selected thus far. If it's round 4 and everybody has a QB except you, don't feel the need to draft one in that round, because nobody can afford to take 2 QBs in the first 5 or 6 rounds. I've never seen it.
Also, the thin positions are touchy in this regard. If you can get Shockey, Gonzalez, or Heap at TE, do it in round 3, 4, or 5. Round 2 is too early, and for me round three is too early too. I'd take Shockey or Gonzalez in round 4 and I might take Heap in round 5, depending on who esle is available. If I can't get one of these three guys, though, I'll wait until round 9 or 10 and take one of the second tier tight ends because after Heap, the difference between all the guys left is very small. The same goes for Defenses. If you see Tampa, Philly, and Miami go early, don't even bother with a defense until later in the draft. There wil always be a defense that comes out of nowhere to play pretty well and since there are 32 of them, you're bound to get a decent one no matter what. I would never take a defense sooner than round 4 and if I did, it would have to be Tampa or Philly, but they're already gone by now. Same goes with kickers. Draft them late.
Fourth, don't automatically fill all of your starting positions before you get backups. I mean this specifically about TEs, Kickers, and Defenses. If it's round 7 and for some reason a great player is still available, like a Koren Robinson or a Donte Stallworth kind of guy who should have been taken by now, go ahead and take them instead of a mediocre TE or DEF, rather than miss out on them because you wanted to fill a starting position. Remember you can always trade them later, so usually go for best value.
Finally, go to footballguys.com or thesportingnews.com and browse their player rankings and construct a draft board of the top 20 RBs, top 20QBs and top 40 WRs. You might also consult corresponding lists on the fantasy football forum here. Know the players. This will give you a huge edge over the average bumbling moron who does fantasy football.
With regard to your Redskins question, the only guys worth taking from the Skins in the top 6 rounds are Coles, Gardner, and Canidate. I wouldn't take any of these guys before round 4. Ramsey could be a guy to get in round 9 or 10. Research the players and you'll understand. Beyond that, dont draft Michael Bennett or Michael Vick and you should be ready to make a good showing..."
