Gabriel Ivan Heinze embarked on his transition to European football at the tender age of 20, when he signed for Spanish side Real Valladolid from Newell's Old Boys in 1997.
Leaving his homeland at such a young age without having turned out for the national side, the tough-tackling, left-footed centre-back was barely known in his home nation.
When he earned his fifth cap with Argentina against Ecuador he had to be introduced to fans in the press back home.
"I left Argentina after just eight games with Newells Old Boys," said Heinze, "and I went to Valladolid, a small club in Spain.
"Those who say I am an unknown in Argentina are quite right," he pointed out at the time. "But now I feel that the gamble I took is paying off, and I'm proud of what is happening with my career."
He arrives in England with a hard man reputation. One newspaper in France ran a poll to discover which player fans thought was the roughest defender in French football - Heinze was the unequivocal winner.
Born in Argentina on 19 April 1978 to a German father and an Italian mother, Heinze holds an Italian passport.
After beginning his career with Newell's Old Boys in Argentina, Heinze moved on to Spanish side Real Valladolid but then spent a year on loan with Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon. There he built up a reputation as a powerful, no-nonsense defender. He is also renowned for his tenacity and leadership qualities and is powerful in the air.
He signed for Manchester United from Paris Saint Germain on 11 June 2004 for a fee of £6.9million.
Heinze played an integral part in Argentina's Copa America and Olympic campaigns, which meant he missed the start of United's 2004/05 season
