Liverpool พยายามจะเซ็นต์สัญญากับหนูRobbie ตั้งแต่เขาอายุเพียง10ขวบ บุคคลที่ค้นพบเด็กหนุ่มผู้มีความสามารถคนนี้คือ Jim Aspinall เพราะความพยายามอดทนเฝ้าดูติดต่อ ติดตาม Robbieตั้งแต่สิบขวบจนถึงเมื่อได้เซ็นสัญญาก็อายุ16ปี.. 6ปีแห่งความพยายามมันคุ้มจริงๆ "It was a fella called Jim Aspinall, who was to have a big influence on my career. Everyone in the city knew him through his love of Liverpool, and the kids that he kept turning up for the academy. It didn't matter to him whether it was one of the kids who went in to become big stars, like me or Macca, or one that didn't make it. He was passionate about all of us, and most of all, passionate about his job."
Liverpool "Phil Thompson and Gerard Houlier had just bombed Paul Ince out of the club and it was very acrimonious, with a lot of bad feeling all around. Thompson went off on one at Jim, shouting at him, 'What the fcuk have you brought that kid here for?' He was saying all that sort of stuff about a kid who was barely out of primary school, and wouldn't say boo to a goose. Jim fixed him with his stare, waited until he'd finished his ranting, and then said, 'Because the kid's got talent, and that's all I'm interested in; bringing in kids who are the future of the club.' He wasn't bothered by anyone's personal opinion, he was only interested in doing what was best for Liverpool Football Club."
แต่คนรอบข้างไม่ว่าจะเป็นญาติพี่น้อง เพื่อนฝูงก็มั่นใจว่าสุดท้ายแล้วยังไงๆRobbieก็ต้องมาลงเอยเป็นนักเตะของ Everton คู่แข่งของ Liverpool ที่้ต้องการ Robbie ไม่น้อยไปกว่ากันเท่าไหร่ เหตุผลหลักก็คือ Robbie เป็นแฟนพันธุ์แท้ของ Everton นี่นา เขายังเคยร่วมทริปไปเชียร์Evertonที่Wembleyกับเพื่อนๆที่ตอนนั้นเซ็นสัญญากับEvertonไปแล้ว หารู้ไม่นัดชิงชนะเลิศFA Cup นัดนี้นี่แหละที่ทำให้Robbie ได้เห็น Ian Rush ด้วยตาของตัวเอง ให้ตายเถอะหมอนี่เก่งจริงๆ ทำเอาฝันว่าตัวเองจะเป็นแบบIan Rush ให้ได้ซักวัน "The lads in the Liverpool Schoolboys like Tony Grant, they were all mad Evertonians, and already hooked up with them, so I think everyone assumed I would join the Blues. Granty was convinced I'd join them when I agree to go down to the FA Cup final on 1989 with all Everton trainees. I was there still supporting Everton for the final against Liverpool. Secretly Though, I'd just begun to harbour dreams about emulating Ian Rush, who scored two that day, and was eventually to have a big influence on my career, and a big impact on me as a young forward learning the game. I was still gutted when Everton lost. If I'm honest, from the age of ten it was always a contest between the two clubs who would get my signature, but it was Liverpool who always seemed to show most interest."
พ่อของเขาตัดสินใจตกลงกับทั้งสองทีมว่าจะร่วมซ้อมและช่วยแข่งให้กับทีมเด็กของทั้งสองทีม โดยไม่มีข้อผูกมัดใดๆ ซึ่งเมื่อมองกลับไปแล้ว Robbieเห็นด้วยกับผู้เป็นพ่ออย่างสุดใจ "What me dad decided was that I would take trials with both Liverpool and Everton, but not commit myself to either. I think he was dead right, because what's the point of committing yourself when you are eleven years old?"
พ่อของเขาปัดข้อเสนอราคาแพงจากสโมสรอื่นๆทั้งหมด และสิ่งที่เขาได้รับเมื่อมาเล่นให้ทีมเด็กของLiverpoolก็มีเพียงแค่เสื้อสีแดงเพียงตัวเดียว "Me, I got a red training top when I signed for Liverpool as a schoolboy, and that was that. Me dad didn't get any money, he didn't get a house or any other inducement, and that's the way Liverpool have always behaved."
แม้การเดินทางไปซ้อมจะเนิ่นนาน แม้จะเหน็ดเหนื่อย แต่Robbieไม่เคยเกี่ยงซ้อมซักครั้ง มีแต่ลุกไม่ขึ้นอยากโดดเรียนมากกว่า ซึ่งแน่นอนแม่ของเขาไม่ยอมเด็ดขาด "Some of the kids I knew couldn't hack it, especially when they discovered birds and booze. It sounds glamorous enough, training with Liverpool, but you had to be there, twice every week no matter what the weather, through blizzards and rain, howling winds. No hanging out with your mates on those nights, no evenings off when you didn't feel like it. And we didn't have a car to get me there, so it was a number 27 bus from Toxteth up to Shiel Road, and change at the Belmont pub for the number 12 to Melwood Drive, and the short walk into the training ground. Then it was the 12 back to the Belmont, and then the number 26 back home. It was hours, and you'd get home knackered, crawl into bed thinking that you'd have to miss school the next day, although me mum never let me. A lot of kids, they couldn't be bothered doing all that, but me, I loved it, I couldn't wait to get on the 27 and start that journey up to Anfield, to train with all me mates, with good blokes like Frank Skelly, Dave Shannon and later Hughie McAuley coaching us. I don't think I was late and I don't think there was one night I didn't want to go."
ความพยายามของLiverpoolที่จะเซ็นสัญญากับเจ้าหนูRobbieให้ได้เกิดขึ้นอีกครั้งเมื่อRobbie อายุได้ซัก11-12ขวบ Kenny Dalglishผู้จัดการทีมขณะนั้น เชิญทีมเด็กของScotlandมาซ้อมแข่งกับทีมเด็กของLiverpool Robbieเล่นได้ดีมากเป็นที่ต้องตาของ Dalglish เขาสั่งให้ Jim จัดการทำทุกอย่างเพื่อให้ได้เซ็นสัญญากับRobbie แต่พ่อของเขาก็ปฏิเสธอีกเช่นแคย อย่างไรก็ตาม Dalglish ก็ไม่ยอมแพ้ง่ายๆ "Jim Aspinall came down to see me dad again. He said that Dalglish had seen me , and thought I was outstanding, and he'd told Jim to get that little Robbie Ryder(Fowler) at all costs. Again me dad said no, and so a few weeks later Jim came down to ours with a message: 'Mr. Dalglish wants to see you' "
และก็เป็นDalglishนี่แหละที่มีส่วนทำให้Robbieและำพ่อของเขาตกลงเซ็นสัญญากับLiverpool เพราะความเป็นคนดีและใจดีของDalglishที่สนับสนุนเป็นกำลังใจให้Robbieตลอดมาแม้เขาจะยังไม่เซ็นสัญญากับLiverpoolก็ตาม "I'll say this now, Kenny Dalglish was always a real gent with me, treated me properly right the way through, and always had faith in me, even when I was this snotty-nosed, cheeky-faced Scouse kid who didn't know his arse from his elbow. If I genuinely didn't have a clue whether I could make it, and thought there were plenty better than me, Kenny never seemed to doubt me."
เซ็ง "One of my best memories from that time was the day when Kenny Dalglish drove me home, and parked right outside our house on Windsor Street. Kenny Dalglish in this big white sports car, a Mercedes I think it was. I even wound the windows down, so that everyone could see us. I took an eternity to get out of the car, with Kenny Dalglish hanging out the window saying goodbye, not one of my mates walked by, and not one of the neighbours stuck their heads out their windows, even though they were all nosey buggers. The next day, for the first time in my life, I was first kid in at school, ready to tell the whole world. Of course, not one of them believed me, I should have taken a picture."
