The Weight Transfer (commonly known as the weight shift)
The way a player's weight transfers in the golf swing is as simple as the weight transfer in any other athletic movement. In baseball, a pitcher turns his entire body over his back leg (therefore transferring his weight back) before turning forward and throwing to the plate. When he finishes his throwing motion, his body has followed his arm through toward home plate (transferring his weight back through toward the target). A tennis player turns and leans their upper body back when getting ready to strike the ball in a serve transferring their weight back before returning the racket forward. During and after the racket strikes the ball she follows the racket through on to the court transferring her weight toward the target. These are just two of the many examples that I could give to you in describing the transfer of weight in an athletic motion. In the golf swing, the weight transfers in much the same way. At address, your body is in a balance position with an equal part of your body over each leg. In a proper back swing, your shoulders and chest turn over your back leg placing more weight over it thus transferring the weight back. Notice I didnt mention moving your feet or your legs in this process. NEVER MOVE YOUR WEIGHT WITH YOUR FEET. I prefer the words weight transfer to weight shift because your weight moves through the turning of your body rather than some shifting or sliding of weight from one foot to the other. To practice this movement, take your golf posture and hold your arms out in front of you with your palms facing the sky. Lay a golf club across your forearms with the club head pointing toward the target thus placing the heavier part of the club head on your forward arm. Now turn your shoulders and chest over your back leg keeping the club head parallel to the ground as you turn. Your feet should be flat on the ground and your chest should be facing your back knee. Feel how your weight has not transferred back. Now, turn back to the address position and then toward the target. Be sure to stay in your posture. Notice how the weight transfers with the turn and finishes over the forward leg and foot. Doing this drill regularly before you practice or play will train your body to sense the proper transfer of weight. The proper transfer or weight will improve you balance, which in turn not only improves your distance, but also your accuracy. Good luck
