Does Refilling / Reusing PET Water Bottles Cause Harmful Substances to Leach into the Water? Frequently Asked Questions Concerning PET Bottles and Reuse How do I know the plastic in my bottle is safe? The U.S. Food and Drug Administration carefully reviews substances intended for food contact before allowing them to be used for food packaging applications. FDA reviews data on composition, potential transfer of materials (migration) to food, and the toxicology of the materials.
Is it true that PET is only approved for single use containers? No. PET is cleared for single and repeated use containers
Will a PET plastic bottle leach unsafe amounts of harmful substances into water if I reuse it? No. The simple act of reusing a PET bottle does not make it hazardous. This statement probably comes from a masters thesis that looked at organic chemical migration from reused PET bottles. This study was not published in a peer-reviewed publication and the data around DEHA migration appear to be random. Other compounds found in the study were not reported due to apparent background contamination. DEHA data may be equally unreliable. A study performed by the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Testing and Research tested PET bottles for DEHA and found no difference between new and used bottles, DEHA levels were similar to controls, and DEHA levels were well below the World Health Organization Guideline of 80 ug/L.
I saw an e-mail that stated PET bottles contain a potentially carcinogenic element (something called diethylhydroxylamine of DEHA). Should I be concerned? No. The e-mail author confused two chemicals, neither one of which is used in PET. The compound referenced in the study is Diethylhexyl adipate, also known as DEHA. Diethylhexyl adipate is not classified as a carcinogen. Diethylhexyl adipate is cleared by FDA for use to make other plastics (not PET) soft and pliable.
