Malaysia takes delivery of its first submarine KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 28 Malaysia has taken delivery of its first submarine a Scorpene built by French military shipyard DCNS in partnership with Spanish shipyard Navantia.
A Royal Malaysian Navy statement today said Nazri Siron, secretary of the Defence Ministry's Procurement Division, headed a team which took delivery of the submarine, named KD Tunku Abdul Rahman after Malaysia's first prime minister, at the French naval base in Toulon, France, last Saturday.
The team also comprised First Admiral Khairudin Khalid, director-general of the Engineering Division, and members of the RMN submarine project team.
At the ceremony, DCNS was represented by its Scorpene project director Didier Husson and Navantia by its managing director Manuel Filgureira.
Navy Chief Datuk Seri Abdul Aziz Jaafar witnessed the handing over.
Abdul Aziz congratulated the crew of the submarine on their having surpassed all obstacles and challenges in qualifying to become the crew of the nation's first submarine.
The Scorpene, a conventional submarine built in Cherbourg, France, can monitor the country's waters to a depth of between 100 and 200 metres, the statement said.
It also said that the submarine was equipped with six torpedo tubes which can fire simultaneously anti-ship surface missiles and anti-submarine torpedoes.
The vessel has the capacity to carry 10 torpedoes and 30 mines, it added.

Kota Kinabalu: The construction of a submarine base under the Ninth Malaysia Plan (9MP) costing RM350 million is expected to start early next year, Region 2 Naval Commander, Rear Admiral Ahmad Kamarulzaman Ahmad Badaruddin said.
"The decision will be made before the end of the year and construction will begin early next year," he said, adding that the construction was expected to take two years.
Speaking after witnessing an anti-terrorism training session involving the Naval Special Force of the RMN here Tuesday, he said, the base would be equipped with a training complex, living quarters, simulator, and supporting infrastructure for submarines.
The submarines ordered by Malaysia from France, costing RM3.5 billion are expected to be based at the new complex in 2008 and would start operations in 2009, he said.
The Navy planned to upgrade the Naval Special Force under the 9MP with diving equipments, and special weapons to make the elite force more effective, Ahmad Kamarulzaman added.
During the training Tuesday, 28 members of the Force were "involved" in rescuing some kidnapped people with the use of helicopters and boats.
Ahmad Kamarulzaman also said, the Royal Malaysian Air Force also took part in the training. - Bernama
