Germans used captured T34 tanks, and Russians used Shermans, so this may have occured in WWII also. T34 was made without much regard for crew comfort Sherman was much more comfortable. Sherman had weaker gun (75mm) compared to T34/85 (85mm gun) but then in late war Shermans used tungsten carbide sabots and this gun was about as powerful as IS-2 122mm gun in antitank role. With HE shells it was weaker than 85mm gun in T34/85. Also Russian T34/85 had a gun decent enough for to take out a Sherman. Unlike German armour, Both Sjherman and T34 were very reliable tanks (late war German tanks were crap). really you can't compare them well. T34/85 has better HE capability, but can't fight alone heavy tanks of that era (that's why Russians made IS-2 and ISU-152 with 152mm cannon). With tungsten carbide sabot sherman is able, but lacks the armour of IS-2 and German Panzerkampfwagen V Panther and later German models. IS-3 is also a fearsome beast, made in 1944. but it was not used during the WWII. Therefore, you have to keep in mind usual mix of medium/heavy tanks used at the time. Again Russians didn't use tungsten carbide sabots, for our little fictional engagement we could equip T34 with sabots and it would be better (IRL that was not possible, but lets imagine that). Both are excellent tanks, and both did better than so much glorified late war German armour, which had a tendency to need major repair after hundred kilometers or maybe less. Tanks wouldn't win our little battle, but the way they are used.
