Thailand backs UN attacks on Libya

Thailand, as a member of the United Nations, supported the UN resolution authorising military action against Libya, Foreign Ministry spokesman Thani Thongphakdi said yesterday.
The cabinet is expected to endorse the Thai stance today, he said. However, the country has no plan to send forces to join the operation at the moment.
Meanwhile, the Thai embassy in Tripoli is trying to persuade the last group of 86 Thais living in the strife-torn country to return to Thailand following international military intervention.
Mr Thani said most of the Thais remaining in Libya have refused to leave the country because they have families there. He said more than 40 Thai labourers have decided to stay on.
"The Thai embassy in Tripoli is coordinating with 86 Thai people over whether they want to return to Thailand. If they say yes, we will evacuate them by land," Mr Thani said.
Of these, 35 Thai labourers are working in Tripoli, 15 in Benghazi and the rest are in other cities.
Thousands of Thai workers last month left Libya by ship for Tunisia, Egypt and Italy before heading back to Thailand on Thai Airways International flights. A large group of Thai labourers has been moved to the southern part of the country as fighting was intensifying in the north.
Mr Thani said Thailand hoped the situation in Libya would return to normal soon. "Thailand hopes the situation will not affect the humanitarian aspects and all parties will take care of foreigners living in Libya," the spokesman said.
The situation in Libya worsened dramatically after forces loyal to Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi launched a fierce counter-offensive against rebel-held areas of the country, prompting the imposition of a no-fly zone over Libya on Saturday and aerial bombardment by US, British and French planes.
Labour Minister Chalermchai Sri-on tried to ease the worries, saying he did not believe the air strikes by international forces would affect Thai workers.
The attacks only zero in on military targets and they would be carried out carefully because foreign military intervention is being watched closely by the world community, he said.
But, if the workers want to return home, the Thai government was ready to help them, he added.
Today, Thai authorities will meet job placement companies to discuss the number of workers under their supervision to prepare for an evacuation plan for those who want to leave Libya.
The Thai government earlier wanted to evacuate workers from the oil-producing country by March 15. However, it now needs to prepare for a new evacuation after Col Gadhafi's crackdown on rebels in the country escalated and caused the UN Security Council to announce harsher action against his forces.
