Axial propeller flow An agitator as traditionally used in the pulp and paper industry, is an axial flow pump.
The basic concept of agitating is that the propeller generates a primary flow that leaves the propeller at a higher velocity than the surrounding liquid. The effect is that the surrounding liquid is accelerated and entrained into that flow.
This entrainment of secondary flow continues as the jet lengthens so that the total flow rate gets larger as the distance from the propeller increases. Hence, the total flow consists of primary and secondary (entrained) flow.
As documented by Yackel [1.], the momentum is maintained constant as the jet expands, as long as the flow does not hit any wall, floor or other obstacle, according to the formula: Mo = QV=CN2D4 for a particular impeller of diameter, D; rotational speed, N; and impeller coefficient, C.
The jet will exit Flygt's agitator propeller and expand at approximately 10 degrees angle in all directions.
