ไม่มีกรุงเทพฯในแผนที่สุวรรณภูมิ?
ไม่ต้องแปลกใจเลยว่าผู้คนเมื่อหลายพันปีก่อน ไม่เคยมีใครเหยียบแผ่นดินกรุงเทพฯ เพราะเวลานั้นพื้นที่บริเวณนี้ยังอยู่ต่ำกว่าระดับน้ำทะเล เมื่อราว ๕,๐๐๐ ปีก่อน ขอบอ่าวไทยกินพื้นที่ลึกเข้าไปไกลกว่าจุดที่ตั้งกรุงเทพฯ ราว ๑๐๐ กิโลเมตร ต่อมาตะกอนดินจากแม่น้ำได้ทับถมจนทำให้กรุงเทพฯ กลายเป็นแผ่นดินเมื่อ ๑,๐๐๐ กว่าปีมานี้เอง
ด้วยเหตุนี้ เมืองสำคัญในยุคสุวรรณภูมิ นอกจากเมืองชายฝั่งทะเลภาคใต้แล้ว ยังมีเมืองที่อยู่ลึกเข้าไปถึงสุพรรณบุรี ราชบุรี กาญจนบุรี นครปฐม เมืองเหล่านี้ คือเมืองชายทะเลในสมัยสุวรรณภูมินั่นเอง
Why no Bangkok in Suvarnabhumi?
It is not surprising that Bangkok is not mentioned in the early documents about Suvarnabhumi, because at that time the area we know as Bangkok was below sea-level.
About 5,000 years ago, the coastline of the Gulf of Thailand was hundreds of kilometers further north, As the Chao Phraya River deposited silt, the muddy estuary extended further south, becoming dry land about 1,000 years ago and giving rise the coastline that we see today.
With this recent evidence, we may suppose that during the Suvarnabhumi Period ports were largely situated at the mouths of rivers along the ancient coastline.
Later, some of them silted up and fell into ruin, while others survived and later became great cites further inland, the ruins of which remain today in places like Suphan Buri, Ratchaburi and Nakhon Pathom.
