แปะ Insider's Blog (Engaged Part 2)
First, let me explain why you're looking at a photo of a cake shaped like the Pentagon. I had the pleasure of attending the 236th Marine Corps Birthday Ball Saturday night in Washington D.C. There are Birthday Balls all over the country. Justin Timberlake attended one in Virginia. I got invited to this one. The D.C. Birthday Ball is hosted by the Commandant of the Marine Corps, General James Amos, and along with the hundreds of Marines in attendance, other guests included the Secretary of the Navy, Ray Mabus, as well as the Secretary of Defense, Leon Panetta. It was an extraordinary event and I was truly honored to be there representing the cast and crew of NCIS.
The Commandant's marching band started the evening, followed by a moving video tribute to our Marines, past and present, the presentation of the colors, speeches from General Amos and Mr. Panetta, followed by the cutting of a giant birthday cake shaped like the Pentagon. Each and every Marine in attendance got a taste of that cake. And the small cake, pictured here, is a miniature of what was cut in front of the crowd as the room sang happy birthday to the Corps. A very cool tradition. Folks, it turns out General Amos and his wife are enormous fans of the show. How great is that?! After talking to many brave Marines, both on active duty and retired, I left the evening with dozens of interesting story ideas and a newfound appreciation for everything the Marine Corps stands for.
So...what's the connection to "Engaged, Part II"? Patriotism. Pride. Motivation to portray our Marines as authentically as possible.
A female Marine, Lt. Gabriella Flores, has been taken in Afghanistan and it's up to NCIS, in conjunction with the Marines, to find her and bring her home. Working with Gina Monreal on Part I and then wrapping up the story in Part II has been one of the most ambitious, entertaining experiences I've had since joining NCIS. How fantastic did Gibbs and Ziva look in Afghanistan? Better yet, how fantastic did our makeshift Afghanistan look in southern California? I was blown away when I first saw the footage and I smile every time I watch the episode. Everyone involved brought their 'A Game' to this one and I can't thank them enough. I also want to thank the Marine Corps and our friends at the Department of Defense for providing some of the vehicles used on-screen as well as their enthusiasm and cooperation throughout. Did we really film at Arlington National Cemetery? No. But through the magic of Hollywood we tried to make it as real as possible and I hope you bought it hook, line and sinker.
And how about that C-130 aircraft Point Magu Naval Air Station provided? Bravo, everybody. Well done.
A very special thank you also goes out to director, Tony Wharmby, who shared my vision for this episode and brought it to life. We are blessed to work with such talented people on a weekly basis. I consider Tony a dear friend and a truly gifted artist. I can't wait to work with him on episode 200 as well!
Mr. Harmon knows how I feel about him. The scene between Gibbs and Flores in the tent after she's rescued is the definition of why I do this for a living. Mark gives us heart, soul, and boundless layers of complexity in a meager glance. It's my genuine pleasure to be working with an actor of his caliber. The same goes for Cote, Michael, Sean, Rocky, David, Pauley, Brian and Matt. I'm the luckiest showrunner in town.
I hope everyone enjoyed the episode. Happy Birthday, Marines. Semper Fi.
