Hi P' At krub,
I'm one of whom math has changed my world and framework of thinking. I am quite confident that investing in 'correct' math will shortcut the learning path for decades, make your analytical skill sharpened and also make the imagination of the idea crystal clear.
However, what should be accompanied with math is analytical skill . . . it is the way to tackle a problem systematically and logically. . . Personally, the analytical skill should lead the math skill and knowledge.
This comes the important thing you mention 'modeling'.
From my experience of doing modeling myself, studying others and commenting another group of others, modeling is a skill, rather than a knowledge. That means even you have a good knowledge of mathematics, you might not be able to use your math to analyze the interesting real world problem. I have found this problem in lots of guys who have done math in my field. It is quite putting unfit cloths (math) into a man (real world problem).
I think. . . a personal training on the skill from expert or from who has done this is a good thing to remedy. Or taking time to solve the problem requiring modeling skill is a good start as well. . . . It is like the first time you ride and then improve your riding skill.
