This is a CORRECT etiquette and norm in academic world.
I think you are confused between Corresponding Author and First Author.
The First Author is the one that the name is mentioned first. Meaning, that person did the majority of the work/research. If it's your work and you wrote the paper, then, you should be the first author.
The corresponding author is usally the advisor, the research director, program director, etc. Usually someone who is not a student. It doesn't mean that coresponding author is getting more credit than first author.
The reason is that the student is going to graduate or move to different program, etc. It's more difficult to get a hold in the future down the road. The paper in science/engineering is usually a portion of a larger research project (e.g one research project has many students work on the subject for years and produces numerous papers), so, the corresponding author is usually someone who oversees the project, can keep track of the personels within the projects, etc.
For an example, 7 years later, someone is interested in the results in the paper you wrote, but you already graduated and move to a different country. You may not even be working in the same field anymore. It's going to be hard for he/she to contact you and get the updated information from you. Your advisor, however, probably know how to contact you (hopefully) and perhaps can give an update of the recent research or follow up work from your paper.
